Vršac belongs to the subregion of South Banat, which covers the furthest south-east part of Vojvodina and it also belongs to the north-east part of the territory of Republic of Serbia. From the southern and eastern side this area is clearly bordered by the river course of the Danube and the state border with Rumania, while in the north and west the administrative boundaries of the municipalities Plandište, Alibunar and Kovin make the spatial lines.
Defined spatially in this way, the subregion of South Banat covers an area of 2,868 km2 (13.3% of the teriitory of Vojvodina and 3.2% of Serbia), where, according to the census of 2002 146,900 inhabitants live, (about 8.0% of the population of Vojvodina and about 1.6% of the population of Serbia). It is obvious that it makes a considerable part of the territory of Vojvodina, which must be taken into consideration in all the development concepts and treated equally as the other regional centers.
In relation to the other important tourist geographical regions on the territory of Serbia, the convenient position of the subregion towards the Danube and Đerdap region, which is contact, is especially emphasized. It is because Đerdap is ranked among the most attractive and the most valuable tourist areas of Serbia, the whole of the Danube basin, as well as of the continental area of Europe.
Several water currents flow through this region, which together with other hydrographic objects, make a diversified and valuable hydro-tourist complex of the subregion. With its attractive characteristics and possibilities for the tourist valorization, we should point out the following: The Danube, the Karaš and the Nera, as natural rivers, then the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal, which is artificial. These water currents can be touristically valorized as independent and complementary tourist resources.
Although it is located at the south border line, the river Danube represents the most important part of the hydrographic network of the subregion. Besides its navigability, which offers very convenient opportunities for the development of the nautical tourism (building of marines and ports), many other characteristics contribute to better and more various tourist valorization of the Danube. The highest avarage monthly water levels, which make it difficult to use water for tourist purposes, are in April, therefore before the period of the most intensive use of the river for recreational purposes. During the summer season water is relatively warm, and the climatic conditions stable, so that the Danube is convenient for swimming and various water-sports.
